A history lesson

Recently, June 19th, was Labour Day here in Trinidad.
T&T’s Labour Day became a public holiday in 1973.  June 19th is the anniversary of the 1937 Butler labour riots.
This year, the local Guardian newspaper pincluded an insert which was the actual newspapers of the days around that time in 1937.

Besides the local Trini news and obviously articles focused on the Butler Riots, it included international references to Hitler in the buildup to WWII....

and included articles on Amelia Earhart who disappeared around July 2nd, 1937.

It made for some interesting local & international historical reading.

I have been replaced....

While we wait for our apartment tile floors to be replaced (now into our 4th week), Mimi has found someone, ok, something else to hug.

The apartment we are staying in, is in a new building. So new that there are only 6 tenants in the entire complex of 100 apartments.

It has a spectacular view, a great gym.....and obviously, a nice fridge.
If we stay any longer - we could be staying longer.

Canada Day Lime in Marabella

Happy Canada Day all!

At the office today, we had a Canada Day Lime - complete with CBC streaming from Ottawa with the Parliament Hill celebrations.
We had a beautiful cake decorated with iconic Canadian images.....

The Saskatchewan Prairies, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.....

Quebec Winter Carnival and the Northern Lights.....

Niagara Falls and the CN Tower.........

And something closer to home for me....the Rockies and the Stampede...

One of the staff created a Canada Day Cocktail.
She called it a called a Cowtown Mickey.  Enough for everyone!

There was also the traditional components of a good lime - beer, rum, Scotch, cutters (appetizers) and good soca music.
Today, in my office..............everyone was a Canadian!

Floor shattering experience

It all started with a pop.
Mimi came home one morning from yoga class and noticed that the tile floor in our family room had popped up 2" in an area 3 ft by 4 ft. We werent really sure what caused it.

I even checked the local seismological website for any earthquakes. Nope.
The cracks in the floor looked like geological faults so we gave them names.

Basically the adhesive had failed and with a bit of expansion the tiles had nowhere to go but up. There are a few other problem areas in the apt but this one was tough to ignore.
We agreed with the landlord that all of the tiles should be replaced. This would necessitate us moving out of the apartment for 3 weeks.  Our furniture was all removed, although I am not sure why the TV had to come of the wall.

Once we moved out, it didnt take long for them to nuke the floors.

The apartment is now awash in busted tiles - piles and piles of busted tiles....

We will see how long it takes to complete the work but the demo of the floors is the quick & easy part.  Out landlord has set us up in a nice apartment but most of our belongings (clothes, kitchen, pantry, beer etc) are still at the old apartment.

I check in on their progress the way to the new apartment each night (and grab whatever I need for the next day).

This could take awhile.

Highway Car Wash

I was coming home from work one sunny evening and found something flowing down on the road. It had created a bit of a traffic jam.....

It could have been a local optimization specialist thinking that Trini's have better uses for their time than waiting at a car wash - why not wash every car as they go by?

It would then leave more time for work, more time with the kids...more time to lime!

I almost took advantage of it - except I just wasnt sure what was coming out of the leak.

This article showed up in the paper two days later. Turns out the same 12" water pipe has been smacked a couple of times by overheight trucks...

Maui fun!

Brought everyone to Maui for a couple of weeks.
This moment may have been the only time the grands were all lined up.

They were all focused on a Unicorn.

Maui is famous for the mystical Unicorn  ; )
